Phillip Puglisi graduated from Hackensack High School in 1929. Phillip was the oldest of four brothers, and was the only brother who afforded a college education. He had graduated college and was a practicing attorney in Hackensack when he was drafted into the army in June 1941.

All four brothers, Phillip, Thomas, Salvatore, and Vincent, were drafted or enlisted into the army by the end of 1942. Phillip's nephew, and Salvatore's son, Frederick Puglisi, was enlisted in Vietnam. Their mother,
Josephine Puglisi, was given a four star pin at the Oritani Theater by the people of Hackensack which recognized the great sacrifice of having four sons in the service at the outbreak of World War II. During Phillip's time in service, he rose to the rank of Captain.

All four brothers served the entire war, and all returned safely. All the brothers greatly appreciated the prayers of their sister, Philomena, who was a nun, while they were in service.
